June 8 is World Oceans Day and what better way to celebrate than with sustainable seafood from your local Haggen. You can feel good buying from our Seafood Counter since every species we offer is 100% sustainable. So, what exactly does that mean? Our seafood comes from sources, whether fished or farmed, that maintain or increase production without jeopardizing the structure or function of the affected ecosystems—ensuring future generations will have the opportunity to enjoy our wide variety of fresh seafood.
We decided to go 100% sustainable over four years ago to encourage fishery management that ensures healthy, abundant fish populations for years to come, and supports marine life research focused on environmental protection. Using Trace Register, our seafood is completely traceable from harvest area to store-delivery.
When you look in our seafood case, you’ll notice both green and yellow tags on all our fresh options. A green tag means the seafood is being caught or harvested with little or no harmful impacts on the environment, future population and other species. Yellow tags indicate there are one or more known issues with this fishery, but improvement programs are in place and it is still a sustainable choice. Each fishery, whether wild or farmed, must go through the same rigorous certification process to receive a sustainable rating.
We know how lucky we are to live in a region with such rich abundance of seafood and we’re doing our best to ensure generations to come will continue to enjoy the our valuable marine resources.
