Is 2022 the year of the alcohol-free cocktail? We’re seeing mocktails and buzz-less spirits popping up in our stores, across the web, and food and beverage industry. If you’re sober curious, we suggest starting with a simple ingredient—simple syrup.
To make this classic ingredient, boil equal parts water and sugar until the sugar is dissolved, then cool, bottle, and store for up to a month in the fridge. Move beyond the norm and spice up (really!) the sweetness. Try simmering with some cinnamon sticks or other whole spices. A mint simple syrup means less muddling and more enjoying. Ginger adds a spicy snap to the sweetness. Plop some berries into the mixture and simmer a little longer before straining out the solids.
Fresh juices always bring out the best in a recipe so try squeezing fresh citrus. Pour some soda water over ice, a dash of fresh juice and a bit of simple syrup make a bright, easy drink.
If you’re looking for something tangy, try a shrub or drinkable vinegar, available in our alcohol department. And remember a tasty, fresh garnish or zest. The best part of getting comfortable with mocktails? Experimenting with delicious ingredients from Haggen.
